Product Thinking Questions

These assess whether they think beyond code to user outcomes.

  1. "Tell me about a feature you shipped. How did you know it was the right thing to build?"
  2. "Describe a time you pushed back on a product spec. What was your reasoning?"
  3. "How do you decide what NOT to build?"
  4. "What's a product you love? What makes it great, and what would you change?"
  5. "Tell me about a feature you built that failed. What would you do differently?"
  6. "How do you know when a feature is 'done'?"
  7. "Walk me through how you'd approach building [relevant feature] for our product."

User Empathy Questions

These reveal whether they've actually talked to users and care about their problems.

  1. "Tell me about a time you talked directly to users. What did you learn that surprised you?"
  2. "How do you get user feedback on something you're building?"
  3. "Describe a time user feedback changed your approach mid-project."
  4. "What's the difference between what users ask for and what they actually need?"
  5. "How would you prioritize between two features if you had limited data?"
  6. "Tell me about a time you advocated for the user against other stakeholders."

Shipping Velocity Questions

These assess their bias toward action and ability to ship under constraints.

  1. "Tell me about a time you shipped something in a week or less."
  2. "How do you decide what to cut from scope when you're behind schedule?"
  3. "What tradeoffs do you consider when deciding how much to invest in a v1?"
  4. "Tell me about a time you shipped something imperfect on purpose."
  5. "How do you balance shipping fast with maintaining code quality?"
  6. "What's your approach to technical debt?"
  7. "Describe your ideal development workflow."

Technical Judgment Questions

These assess practical engineering skills in product contexts.

  1. "How do you decide between building vs. buying a solution?"
  2. "Tell me about an architecture decision you made. What were the tradeoffs?"
  3. "How do you approach refactoring while shipping features?"
  4. "What's your approach to testing in a fast-moving environment?"
  5. "How do you handle a bug in production that affects users?"
  6. "Tell me about a time you optimized something. How did you prioritize?"

Ownership & Initiative Questions

These reveal whether they take ownership beyond assigned work.

  1. "Tell me about something you built that wasn't assigned to you."
  2. "How do you handle ambiguity when starting a new project?"
  3. "Describe a time you identified a problem before anyone else did."
  4. "What side projects are you working on?"
  5. "Tell me about a time you went beyond your job description."
  6. "How do you stay updated on what users want?"

What Good Answers Look Like

  • Specific examples: They can cite real situations, not hypotheticals
  • User focus: Answers reference impact on users, not just technical details
  • Pragmatism: They acknowledge tradeoffs and constraints
  • Ownership: They say "I decided" and "I shipped," not "we" or "the team"
  • Self-awareness: They can admit failures and learnings
  • Curiosity: They ask questions about your product and users
